Ice dams form on roofs, typically along the edge, as snow and ice repeatedly melt and freeze. The ice then creeps under the shingles and can leak into your attic. Depending on the size of the leak, it can pour through your ceiling or drip down through walls. Signs of ice dams include large icicles or ice columns forming along your roof. We explain how to prevent ice dams during the winter, plus what to do if you have water damage.
How To Prevent Ice Dams
If you have had an ice dam before, you will usually have one again. Even if you haven’t had water damage, it’s best to take steps to prevent ice dams from returning. Plus, just because you don’t see a leak doesn’t mean there isn’t one. These steps will help stop ice dams from forming.
- Inspect And Repair Your Roof – Check the inside and outside of your roof for damage. Repair or replace loose and damaged shingles, replace rotting roof decking and look for water stains or damage.
- Increase Roof Drainage – Vents, flashing, and other items on your roof will prevent drainage and increase the chances of an ice dam. Your roof should slope away from anything that could block water and ice. You can prevent ice build-up by adding flashing around plumbing and exhaust vents.
- Improve Your Attic Insulation – One of the biggest reasons ice dams form is inconsistent temperatures in your attic. Adding insulation to your roof rafters will help regulate the temperature and prevent ice from building up. Additionally, add more insulation between your attic and the floor below to keep the temperature consistent.
- Check Attic Vents – Your attic has vents that regulate the temperate and pressure of your roof. However, if vents are blocked or inadequate, they will cause hot and cold spots along your roof where ice dams can form.
- Clean Gutters And Downspouts – Your gutters and downspouts allow rain and melting snow to drain away from your roof. However, water will build up in the gutters if they are clogged. As it freezes, it forms a natural barrier that increases the chances of an ice dam forming.
- Rank Your Roof During Heavy Snowfalls – Okay, this may sound strange but raking your roof limits the amount of snow. This means less melting snow and a smaller chance of ice dams. If a significant snowfall, use a snow rank to clear your roof.
